Many of us have grown up in churches in which truth was downplayed in order to entertain. Youth culture seemed to dominate, not just a particular Sunday School class, but the entire church. Pizza parties and movies replaced the preaching of God’s Word and the ordinances of baptism and the Lord’s Supper. As we grew older, we began to ask serious questions, but nobody was giving serious answers. When we began to grow hungry for the Bread of Life, we discovered that pizza just wasn’t cutting it anymore. When we struggled through great trials, we found that we needed more than to “dare to be a Daniel.” Phrases like “being saved” and “making a decision for Christ” began to lose their meaning because nobody could tell us for certain just from what we were being saved or who exactly Christ is.
In response, many have walked away from the church. If the people who claim to have to truth are not able to tell you what that truth is, then you might as well look elsewhere. If church is just a social club for having good time, you know that you can have a better time with people more to your liking somewhere else. Others have faithfully remained with their churches, but they still struggle with the fact that their biblical diet is weak. At Trinity Baptist Church, we take our faith seriously. That is not just because it is “our faith”—some subjective experience that blows about with the winds of our feelings. Rather, it is “the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints” (Jude 3). We have been delivered from judgment by Jesus Christ and his atoning work, and so we take the Lord Jesus seriously. We take his Word seriously, believing the Scripture to be divinely inspired and inerrant in all its parts. We love the gospel—the good news—of Jesus Christ and what he has done to secure our redemption. Therefore we seriously—yet joyfully—embrace and teach that gospel which “turned the world upside down” (Acts 17:6). We take seriously the gospel for which men have died in their struggle to reform the church along biblical lines. We seriously believe that our source of authority for faith and life is found in Scripture alone. We believe that we are saved from the wrath due our sins by Christ alone, and that we come to Jesus Christ through faith alone. All of this is because of God’s grace alone; “for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure” (Phil 2:13). Therefore, we cannot sing our own praises but ascribe all glory to God alone. This gospel is our joy, and the Triune God of this gospel is our love. We would be delighted if you joined us in serious and joyful worship of our Redeemer King at Trinity Baptist Church. We meet on Sundays at 9:45 am for Sunday School, and at 11:00 am and 6:00 pm for corporate worship. We also meet on Wednesdays at 6:30 pm for prayer and Bible study. Yours in Christ, Pastor Stephen Thomas
